Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, Massachusetts, is the home of the Davenport Collection, a preservation orchard of pre-twentieth century apple varieties. Presently, the collection consists of 119 varieties of apples not common in commercial markets today.

The collection took root during the depression when a government work program was set up to remove neglected fruit trees throughout the state. S. Lothrop Davenport, then employed by the Massachusetts Department of Food and Agriculture, headed the project which destroyed thousands of trees, as well as many irreplaceable apple varieties.

In the 1940's Mr. Davenport, then secretary of the Worcester County Horticultural Society, convinced the Society to save some of the best heirloom varieties from extinction. He systematically collected 60 worthy varieties recommended by the Massachusetts and New York State Cooperative Extension Services. The trees were grown in his own orchard in Grafton, Massachusetts, until 1973 when the collection was relocated to Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, Massachusetts.

The preservation orchard was a cooperative venture between the two organizations until 1990, with OSV using the fruit for demonstration purposes and the Society distributing scionwood nationwide each March. When the Society established Tower Hill Botanic Garden in 1986, the orchard was relocated to the new headquarters. This relocation enabled the Society to make the orchard available to the public on a regular basis for their education and pleasure. As in the past, scionwood is distributed from the Davenport Collection each year to those interested in preserving and enjoying these uncommon, hard-to-find varieties. If you would like to order apple scions, please go to the electronic "order page" after reviewing the list.
We charge $3.00 per scion stick with a minimum order of 4 sticks, maximum of 5 per individual variety. Thank you!
