Its not impossible to have lovely roses once you get the know-how using the New Generation varieties introduced by Jackson & Perkins. Using modern or old garden rose varieties, success can be achieved for anyone from the beginner to the advanced gardener. Handouts, pamphlets, a copy of the instructors book Rose Growing Simplified, as well as American Rose Societys Handbook for Selecting Roses will be used as texts for both classes. All are included in the course fee. Two rose bushes will be offered as attendance prize, compliments of David Austin of England and Roseland Nursery of Acushnet, Mass. Armand J. Lapierre is the author of Rose Growing Simplified, now in its fourth edition and endorsed by the American Rose Society. He has been growing roses for over forty years, many of them blue-ribbon winners. Armand is the founder and past-president of the Seaside Rosarians which serves all of eastern Massachusetts. Members $60, non-members $65 Instructor: John Bunker, Fedco Trees Pomologist John Bunker of Fedco Trees visits Tower Hill and the Davenport Collection of Heirloom Apples for an apple scion grafting workshop. Choose from a variety of rare heirloom apple cultivars, as well as pear and plum scions. Students will learn to bench graft (whip and tongue) and top work. Each student will leave with several trees (approx. 8-10) that they have grafted themselves and the knowledge to care for them. All supplies included in tuition fee except for grafting knives which can be purchased from John for $16, or bring a utility knife with extra blades. Al DeLuca is accredited in floral design by the American Institute of Floral Designers and has been recognized for his outstanding contribution to the floral industry by the American Academy of Floriculture. His designs have been featured in both the Philadelphia and Boston flower shows. His mastery of floriculture ranges from contemporary to traditional and European styles. Vosburgh Sogetsu Ikebana is an internationally recognized school of Japanese flower arranging. Kaye provides the flowers for each class and will have supplies and equipment for purchase by students who wish them. Members $15, non-members $17.50 Register for this program ... Join us for afternoon tea and a colorful presentation on one of the 20th centurys foremost landscape architects, Beatrix Jones Ferrand. Ferrand opened her landscape design office in New York in 1895. In 1899 she joined Frederick Law Olmsted, Charles Eliot, and others in founding the American Society of Landscape Architects. During her fifty-year career, Farrand designed approximately 200 gardens. Among her major projects were Dartington Hall in Devonshire, England, Dumbarton Oaks in Washington D.C., the Rockefeller Estate in Maine, and projects for Princeton and Yale Universities.
