Program Perspectives Winter 2009-2010

T
he diversity of the Plant Kingdom astounds. There are approximately 230,000 species of flowering plants in the world. From the tiny Wolffia, a member of the Duckweed family, to the giant sequoia, Sequoiadendron giganteum, plants have adapted to live in environmental conditions on every continent, even Antarctica. What is even more amazing is that we humans, if we recreate certain environmental conditions, can grow many of these plants for our own enjoyment and fascination.

Some of the most intriguing of these are the carnivorous plants that have adapted to live in low nutrient habitats by supplementing their diets with animal life. Tower Hill Botanic Garden welcomes the New England Carnivorous Plant Society which will be presenting a series of programs that you and your family are sure to enjoy. In addition, the Cactus and Succulent Society's Art Scarpa will be presenting a series of programs highlighting the great diversity of plant life and house plants that do well in cool New England winter temperatures.

After last year's excessive rain, and crop failures caused by the pathogen late blight, it makes sense to grow vegetables in a more controlled environment. We need a back-up plan. Many of the vegetables available at the market are grown hydroponically. Getting started in hydroponics can be confusing, especially with all choices of growing mediums, nutrients, and lighting systems available. We are pleased to offer an Introduction to Hydroponics class to help sort it all out for those ready to take the next step in the science of horticulture.

We will also offer classes on more traditional gardening techniques, such as seed starting, kitchen gardens, and home orcharding. We are especially pleased to offer a Winter Wine Series in collaboration with Classic Wines Importers and Pepper's Fine Foods Catering, featuring Chef Paul Wilson. Add art and photography classes, a stonewall workshop, landscape lighting, practical pruning, ikebana and flower arranging, rustic furniture design, and more - we have something for everyone.

Just a reminder, when you sign up for a class, you have access to the gardens for that day. Please be sure to sign up early!
